Fáilte and welcome to our June edition of Am Seacláid, (The Irish word for Chocolate Time!)
Boy have the last 5 months whizzed past or what! Summer is really here – the villages are alive and bustling with tourists from near and far and the boats have been making trips to Skellig Michael since May 14th and are packed to capacity when they undertake the journey out to this desolate yet stunning island! If you would like to know more about Skellig Michael, be sure and check out our previous blog post, as we delve into the history behind the island and what now lies ahead. From taking the top spot on block buster films to wild life documentaries, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a must see for young and old

Back by very popular demand are our Tiffin Clusters & our Hot Toddy Truffles!! Our Tiffin Clusters are bite sized clusters containing biscuit and sultanas and then covered in delicious milk chocolate. They are perfect for nibbling or sharing with family and friends! Our Hot Toddy Truffles on the other hand are a real delight for the chilli lovers out there… offering intense flavours of Irish whiskey and chilli, these truffles are enrobed with creamy milk chocolate. To obtain the intense flavour, we marinate chilli seeds in whiskey before they are strained from the whiskey and added to our secret truffle centre mix. We have had a lot of our customers requesting that these products be available ‘All year round’ so your wish is our command… enjoy!
In the local area
Discover Derrynane is organised by the OPW and is just around the corner. It takes place in Derrynane House & National Historic Park on the 16th, 17th and 18th of June and showcases the beauty & diversity of Derrynane. It is a weekend of fun, games, events, workshops and wildlife discovery and is suitable for all the family. There is a great variety of FREE events throughout the weekend so please support this event and share it with anyone you feel would like to attend. See poster below for all activities.
The blocks are all up, the roof is on and windows and doors will be going in next! We can almost see the light at the end of the tunnel! The external extension is almost complete and we are now turning our attention to the inside where everyone is working really hard to get this job done! Our weather has been relatively good however it has taken a slight turn for the worst over this past week. Anyone that has gone through an extension or too a new build will know what is involved, the headaches, the little triumphs, the constant communication and need to be onsite, in general, the ups and downs that are involved. But when you near the end, those headaches and miscommunication all fade away and the focus is solely on getting over the end line. Surely by our next blog in July we will be showing you painted walls, picture’s hanging etc. etc. but you know as well as we do, one day at a time! We will keep you posted, but for now enjoy the pics so far…
Chocolate of the Month
Our chocolate for the month of June is our MINT Dark Chocolate Truffles. This is a very special dark chocolate truffle which is only made during our summer season here at Skelligs Chocolate. This truffle is a wonderful blend of premium mint oil mixed with our signature truffle centre and enrobed with delicious creamy 54% dark chocolate. This is the second Mint flavoured product we produce here at Skelligs Chocolate and is also very popular. Often referred to as after-dinner treats as the mint oil consumed after a meal can aid digestion and also cleanses the palette. As a special treat, we will include a FREE 150g Pouch of Mint Truffles with any orders over €40.00 for the month of June. All you have to do is type in the coupon ‘mint’ at the checkout stage. (Each blog will include a Chocolate of the Month so keep an eye out!)
Fáilte Ireland and The Wild Atlantic Way
As you know from previous blog posts Fáilte Ireland and The Wild Atlantic Way have been mentioned more than once. This month we had a visit from a lot of Fáilte Ireland representatives from around Ireland as they took a tour of the Skelligs Coast and all it had to offer. This included a well-earned stop at our Chocolate Factory, where Colm spoke with the group all about what it is like to run a chocolate factory literally at the edge of the world. The trials and tribulations, when he first purchased the company back in 2004 to what it is now. Even after a terrible fire in 2010 left the building in ruins, Colm explained how difficult it was to sometimes keep going but knowing all the time that he had a real treasure, unbelievably hard working staff, all of whom are from the local area and depended on him for a job. So together they rose again, re-built the building you see today and are now in the process of building an extension! The group also received a real treat from Áine, one of our exceptional chocolatiers here at the factory; handmade customised chocolate shoes, one with the Fáilte Ireland Logo and one with the Wild Atlantic Way Logo, see below. The group were absolutely blown away and could not wait to meet Áine to find out more!
We also got to meet the wonderful Radio 1 show presenter Ryan Tubridy last Friday morning, as he and his show promote the Fáilte Ireland summer campaign ‘Embrace the Wild Atlantic Way of Life’. The tour known as ‘Tubs on the Wild Atlantic Way’ began on Monday 29th May in Galway on Arranmore Island, then onto Achill Island, down to Ballybunnion, on to Baltimore and finishing in our beautiful neighbouring village of Portmagee last Friday, June 2nd. The show was broadcast from The Mooring’s Pub in Portmagee village and is widely known for its connection with Star Wars as a lot of the cast stayed here and hung out during filming on Skellig Michael. If you are reading this from Ireland, you can listen to the show here and you will hear our very own Colm speak about Skelligs Chocolate at the very end of the show!
So that’s it for this month, we hope you enjoyed our June Newsletter.
